Butyl Acrylate Uses and Its Characteristics

What Is Butyl Acrylate?

Butyl acrylate, also known as 2-butyl acrylate and n-butyl acrylate, is a colorless liquid with the molecular formula C7H12O2. It belongs to the chemical category of acryloyl compounds. It is almost insoluble in water and has toxicity similar to methyl acrylate. It irritates the skin and eyes. It is soluble in organic solvents like ethanol, ether, acetone, etc. This product is obtained through the esterification of acrylic acid and n-butanol in the presence of sulfuric acid, followed by neutralization, washing with water, alcohol removal, and distillation. Butyl acrylate uses are diverse, primarily used as an intermediate in organic synthesis, adhesives, emulsifiers, coatings, etc. We are specialized butyl acrylate distributors, committed to providing high-quality products to its customers.

Boiling Point of Butyl Acrylate

Butyl acrylate is part of the acryloyl compounds. The melting point of butyl acrylate is -64.6°C, and its boiling point is 145.7°C.

Solubility of Butyl Acrylate

Butyl acrylate is slightly soluble in water, with a solubility of 0.14g/100ml water (20°C) and 0.12g/100ml water (40°C). The solubility of water in n-butyl acrylate is 0.8ml/100g (20°C). It is miscible with organic liquid reagents like ethanol, ether, etc.

Density of Butyl Acrylate

Butyl acrylate is a colorless oily liquid that is flammable. The molecular structural formula is CH2=chcoo (CH2)3coh3, with a molecular weight of 128.07. Its relative density is 0.894.

What Are the Douwin's Butyl Acrylate Uses?

Paint and Coatings

In the study of self-drying acrylic-modified alkyd resins, butyl acrylate is selected as a formulation component of active acrylic resins. Adding butyl acrylate lowers the glass transition temperature and increases the flexibility of the coating. An active acrylic resin with viscosity <100s, 50% solid content, and acid value of 13~15mg KOH/g was prepared. The resin is a key modification of alkyd products. This achievement creates conditions for preparing coatings with excellent oil resistance, quick drying, high hardness, and weather resistance. Butyl acrylate is an effective ingredient commonly used in the coatings industry for preparing multi-purpose, high-quality products, such as coatings for buildings, automobiles, and household appliances.

Adhesives and Sealants

The raw material of butyl acrylate includes butyl acrylate gel, butyl acrylate emulsion pressure-sensitive adhesive, and electrostatic flocking tape. The annual growth rate of pressure-sensitive adhesives abroad is 8~10%. They are mainly used in the coating of paper fabrics, non-woven fabrics, PE, PVC, OPP, and other industries, such as automotive instruments, electronic photography, electro-coloration, engineering, etc.

Cleaning Products and Antioxidants

Acrylic acid can be used in detergents. Chelating agents are major additives in detergents, saving active substances and preventing residues on fabrics, making the washed fabrics colorful. Chelating agents mainly include phosphates, nitrogen-containing organic chelating agents, and acrylic polymers.
